Optical Transceiver Procurement Checklist: Compatibility, Samples and Acceptance

Use an optical transceiver RFQ and procurement checklist covering host ports, rate and PMD, fiber and connectors, FEC and CMIS, sample validation, batch acceptance, labels and delivery versions.

Submit complete link conditions before selecting a P/N

Reliable procurement starts with a complete RFQ table, not only a quantity and data rate. Provide the host vendor and model, line card or port, form factor, electrical mode, rate, PMD, exact reach, fiber, connector, FEC, temperature, quantity and delivery target so a candidate direction can become a testable P/N.

Make host and port fields specific

Record the switch, NIC, server, accelerator or transport device vendor and model, line card, port, software version and lane mode. OSFP, QSFP-DD, QSFP28 and SFP28 establish only part of the boundary. They do not replace electrical-interface, breakout and management-protocol checks.

Keep rate, PMD, fiber and connector on one row

Each RFQ line should pair data rate with SR, VR, DR, FR or LR, fiber type, exact reach and connector. MPO-12, MPO-16, duplex LC, dual LC and Dual CS have different cabling and polarity plans. PMDs with the same form factor or reach are not automatically interchangeable.

Put FEC and management fields into the sample plan

Define host FEC, EEPROM or CMIS/SFF-8636 fields, compatibility coding, power, temperature and diagnostics requirements. Sample testing should cover link-up, management data, FEC, optical power, errors, link flap and sustained traffic while retaining the host, module and software versions.

A passed sample is not universal compatibility

A sample result applies only to the recorded host, port, software, cabling and module P/N. Multi-vendor or multi-generation deployments need a target-platform matrix. One successful switch port cannot support a compatibility promise for every device.

Define sampling and exception handling before batch delivery

Agree the inspection ratio, stability duration, power and temperature observation, error and FEC criteria, P/N and label checks, packaging, traceability and the isolation, retest or replacement path for exceptions. Thresholds must come from project specifications or agreed documents rather than invented values.

Do not turn pending commercial fields into claims

Without a formal specification, test record or business confirmation, price, lead time, certification, capacity, supported-vendor count and quality commitments remain fields to confirm. Submit the equipment, link and quantity details through the contact page so the project team can respond item by item.
