Frequently asked questions

Which 10G SFP+ PMD matches my distance?

The series spans a 30m copper direction through 300m and 400m on multimode to 10km, 20km, 40km and 80km on single-mode. SR covers in-hall links, LR covers 10km, and ER or ZR directions extend the span. Beyond about 40km the loss and dispersion budget matters more than the reach label.

Will a 10G SFP+ module work in a 1G SFP port?

No, and the reverse is the more common question. Many SFP+ ports accept a 1G SFP module when the port is configured for 1G, but a 1G-only port cannot carry a 10G module. Confirm the supported port speeds and whether the platform requires explicit speed configuration.

For a short 10G server link, should I use an SR module or a DAC?

At 10G a DAC is fixed-length, draws no power and suits ports a rack apart or closer. A 10G SR module over structured multimode fiber is worth it when the link crosses rows, when patch panels are already in the path, or when either end has to be maintained independently. Cable path length and maintenance model usually decide before cost does.
