Frequently asked questions

Does a 25G link need FEC?

It depends on the PMD and the host, and it is the most common cause of a 25G link that comes up but drops errors. Some 25G directions assume FEC is enabled on both ports while others do not. Confirm the required FEC mode on both target platforms and make sure they agree; a module cannot resolve a mismatch.

Will a 25G SFP28 module work in a 10G SFP+ port?

Usually not as a 25G link. The cages are mechanically compatible, but the port has to support the 25G electrical rate. Some platforms allow an SFP28 module to negotiate down to 10G and others reject it outright, so confirm per platform rather than assuming the shared cage means interoperability.

Which 25G PMD covers my distance?

The series spans roughly 70m OM3 and 100m OM4 on multimode up to 40km on single-mode. SR suits server-to-ToR runs, LR covers 10km, and ER or the WDM directions extend further. Multimode reach is bounded by the fiber grade already installed, so verify that before selecting.
